Emotional Well-Being (Part 4)

Smell can be used beneficially in healing efforts. Scents are experienced long before words. Whether for relieving stress, stabilizing mood, improving sleep, eliminating pain, relieving nausea or improving memory and energy levels, scents can actually change nervous system biochemistry.

Essential oils can facilitate a rapid emotional response in the brain and the body to facilitate such a release. Essential oils are powerful biochemical agents for emotional balance, wellness and toxic release, which can be paired or partnered with any holistic or medically-derived program to create a successful approach to mental and emotional wellness.

Moods are often perceived as having chosen us, as if they are happening to us. Rather, the chemical impact of our emotions and other exogenous ligands is the real chooser of moods. That’s why we reach for certain floods like sugar, caffeine, or a drug of choice. It’s also the reason we choose to interact with certain people, do certain things, and act our certain behaviors because of how it makes us feel and to get a “chemical” hit.

What if, we could use this knowledge to choose the mood we want to feel and then actually feel it – without harmful substances or recreational drugs? What if we could think of a desired mood and then choose to use a healthful exogenous ligand that is capable of creating it? With essential oils, we really do have the ability to choose our moods.

Rather than feeling victimized by our emotional states, with the knowledge of how essential oils work and the scientific proof that they really do, you can now take control of your emotional state and literally choose your mood.

Emotional healing and rebalancing of moods is accomplished when a new stimulus is introduced to the same chain of command in the brain.  If you’ve read my previous posts on Emotional Wellness you now understand that an aroma enters the olfactory system, and in turn the limbic system and amygdala, hypothalamus and other parts of the brain and body. Depending on what aroma is introduced and the type of information it conveys determines the brains response.

Traumatic memories which are stored in the amygdala can be released by utilizing essential oils. If the significance of these events can be shifted, the amygdala can release the trauma of the memory, which makes for a powerful emotional healing tool and the ability to rebalance moods.

It’s time to take back control of your moods and release those emotions that are keeping you stuck and in a negative place.
